Hair Ice
I went for a walk along a local path in Scotland and found four examples of Hair Ice. Something new to me. I thought it might be of interest to your members

Louise, I,ve found out that there are few Lichen records in the area so I,m photographing all I can find. A total of 25 so far.

Hello Louise, Martin Warne told me about the post re-hair ice (identified by Helen Kirk). It is caused by a fungus, Exidiopsis effusa, in twigs and branches. The fungus expels moisture which freezes. Under the right conditions, I think it,s just below freezing, the moisture slowly freezes causing the ice to grow, ian.

Hi Ian,
Good to see you’re getting out and about despite the Lockdown.
We’ve regularly seen two-inch needle ice pushing up bits of peat on paths etc. whilst ‘Up North’ but I’m not sure we’ve seen hair ice very often. Is it on a dead (?) twig?
By the way , nice lichens in the background – would be good if we had these in Doncaster 😉
