Mr M. H. Stiles
Founder of Doncaster Scientific Society

Mr Mathew Henry Stiles, the oldest chemist in Doncaster, a founder of the Doncaster Scientific Society in 1880, has died at his home in Avenue Road, Doncaster aged 88. He retired in 1917 and had kept a complete record of rainfall in Doncaster for over 30 years.

He was interested in several branches of science, his speciality being photo-microscopy, though to use his own phrase, he “had a certain acquaintance with geology, botany, physics and optics”. He made a telescope when he was 15. He was a life vice-president of Doncaster Scientific Society and still played golf when he was 80.

The funeral will be at Doncaster today, following a service in the parish church at 2 p.m.
